We hinted above that different artists can use synaesthesia more or less in their work. Some synaesthetic artists do not use synaesthesia in their professional life at all, while others place it to the fore. And even non-synaesthete artists might overtly use synaesthesia as a device. The artist David Hockney is reported to have used synaesthesia-like associations when designing opera stage sets, inspired by the musical scores. But synaesthesia is not obviously apparently in his other works (and it is unclear to me whether he self-declares as a synaesthete or not). Even if synaesthesia is used by synaesthetic artists, the artwork does not automatically become a literal depiction. Many synaesthete artists describe their synaesthesia as a starting point, like a jumping board from which to leap into artistic creativity. But if synaesthetes do choose to exploit their synaesthesia in art forms, how will this art be received? Is synaesthesia aesthetically appealing to people without synaesthesia? Put simply, does synaesthesia make for ‘good art’?
